The Mote in the Other Eye- Surrendering the Outcome

In my previous post I talked about the popular trend of pinning all of the world’s problems on someone else and never taking accountability for one’s own side. I also admitted how I, too, have fallen into that trend many times, and how my conscience and Jesus’s words have always been there to convict me it is wrong to stay there.

At the end of the last post, I mentioned that when I recognize my folly and tell myself to focus on the beam in my own eye, there is a part of me that is worried about what might happen if I do so. That fear is based on a profound distrust of the “other side.” If I’m not there to keep them in check, who will be?

This is because our culture’s “us vs them” mentality leads us to shore up our own side even as we’re tearing down the other. In order to strengthen our arguments, we make ourselves blind to our own failings, excusing them as inaccurate or unimportant. So, now if I focus my energies on correcting myself instead, then that’s one less voice keeping the other side honest. Imagine if everyone on my side turned to self-introspection. We might take care of all the problems over here, but the other side’s problems will abound unfettered.

The Need for Surrender)

Well…yes, there is that potential outcome. There are other, more optimistic outcomes, but there is no guarantee of them. I do trust that good will ultimately prevail, but there is the possibility that if I focus on improving myself, the other side will run rampant in the meantime, and things will get worse for a while.

What this means, then, is that focusing on the beam in my own eye is not only an exercise in humility, but also a leap of faith. It means doing what is right in my own sphere with the hope, not the guarantee, that things will work out for the best because of it.

For this reason, I think an excellent companion to Jesus’s words on removing the beam from our own eyes is his later injunction that “if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me,” Matthew 16:24. Once again, he’s talking about picking up our own cross, denying our own self. And his use of the word “cross” makes clear that this is something hard, painful, and even dangerous.

Let’s take a moment to take these abstract concepts and personalize them. Just what would you call “your side,” and what would you call the “other side?” Conservatives? Liberals? The Patriarchy? Feminists? White supremacists? DEI peddlers? Colonizers? Immigrants? Whichever tribe you belong to, I’m sure that if you were honest there’s some house cleaning that is needed over there. Would you be willing to take up your cross and focus on the beam in your own eye? Would you be willing to stop hammering the other side as you set your gaze inward? It’s a lot to ask…but it is what is asked.

The Richness of Scriptural Symbolism- Static Images

Throughout this series we have looked at symbols in their most complex forms and gradually introduced simpler and simpler forms. We started with lived-out moments that reenact something bigger, then moved on to carefully constructed parables, and most recently we looked at brief dream sequences which stripped away context and story to provide concentrated symbolic scenes.

There is, of course, an even simpler form of symbols and it is probably the first form that comes to mind when we heard the word. It is symbols as single, static images. These are things like the Christian Cross, the Star of David, or the Scales of Justice.

An argument could certainly be made that the more fundamental a symbol is, the more applications and representations it will hold. This would mean that these single static images will often have the most interpretations of all.

In today’s post we will take a look at two examples of this type of symbol and consider the sorts of things that they might stand for. I should first note, though, that while both of these symbols are religious, neither is divinely established in any religious text. There is no scripture that says that these specific symbols should be part of the iconography of the Jewish or Christian people, so let us not assume that these symbols are necessarily under God’s authorship.

The Star of David)

The first symbol we will consider is the Star of David. This six-pointed star has long been a symbol of the Jewish faith and is even the central element in the flag of Israel. Perhaps the first representation that we see in it is the fact that it is a star, or a sun, thus something that provides light and guidance, or which can be a marker to guide us along our way.

We also notice that there is one large hexagon in the middle, surrounded by six small triangles that extend from its sides. This could be seen as God in the center, with all other creations gathered in observation of Him. It even brings to mind Joseph’s dream of standing in the midst of his brethren as they bowed to him.

Of course, one can also see the shapes of two equilateral triangles, one upright and one inverted, offset and overlapping. With this view in mind, we can see one triangle as God descending downward and the other as mankind extending upward, the overlap being where the two come into union with one another. To the Jew, that place of union could be seen as the Law or the temple, while to the Christian it would be Christ.

The Christian Cross)

The Christian Cross must be one of the simplest symbols ever made: two lines crossing at right angles. Of course, it immediately invokes memories of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. When considering that application, it becomes simultaneously a symbol of man’s greatest cruelty and God’s greatest mercy, an interesting paradox.

The vertical line of the cross can also be seen to stand for God, while the horizontal line stands for the earth, or the horizon. The point of juncture in the middle then has a similar meaning to the overlapping triangles in the Star of David: the place where heaven meets earth, meaning the church or Jesus.

With our modern system of world coordination, the crossing lines can also be seen as a longitude and a latitude, suggesting the ability to pinpoint where we stand spiritually, or suggesting a guided destination for where we need to go.

We could go on quite a bit lot longer in our analysis of each symbol. Hopefully this has been enough to establish that their simplicity does not make their applications few. Rather, it is the inverse. Because they are such a basic representation of something so fundamental, their applications are virtually infinite. They are literal signs, pointing the way to much, much more

The Nature of Sacrifice- Galatians 2:20, Matthew 10:38-39

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

COMMENTARY

I am crucified with Christ, but Christ liveth in me
I have already discussed how the nature of our sacrifice is to reform us to be in the image of Christ. This passage from Paul further stresses that Christ is also our exemplar in that sacrifice. Yes, he performed his atonement to cleanse our sins, but he also did it to demonstrate for us what we must do.
There is a beautiful intersection here of Christ’s sacrifice and our own. We sacrifice to become like him, and he sacrifices so that that is even possible. Were it not for his atonement, then it wouldn’t matter what we tried to sacrifice, we wouldn’t be able to experience the necessary change of heart. We might take a leap of faith, but there would be nothing to catch us on the other side.
This signifies that there is an order to sacrifice. Christ’s is the first, the prerequisite that allows us to make our own. Strange as it might sound, the freedom that Christ wins for us is the freedom to sacrifice; the freedom to not have to hold onto the old.

And he that taketh not his cross is not worthy of me
He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it
And now consider Christ’s famous pronouncement that only those who are willing to lose their life shall find it. He is not telling us that if we give up our old life then we’ll get it back again later. That wouldn’t be a sacrifice, after all, that would be a loan. No, what we give up will truly be given up, and the life that he promises we will find is not our old one back again. The life that we find will be an entirely new one: his life. We are to bear our cross, be “crucified with Christ,” and trust that as we do this new life will emerge.
