Scriptural Analysis- Exodus 39:1-9

1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron; as the Lord commanded Moses.

2 And he made the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

3 And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into wires, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, with cunning work.

4 They made shoulderpieces for it, to couple it together: by the two edges was it coupled together.

5 And the curious girdle of his ephod, that was upon it, was of the same, according to the work thereof; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen; as the Lord commanded Moses.

6 And they wrought onyx stones inclosed in ouches of gold, graven, as signets are graven, with the names of the children of Israel.

7 And he put them on the shoulders of the ephod, that they should be stones for a memorial to the children of Israel; as the Lord commanded Moses.

8 And he made the breastplate of cunning work, like the work of the ephod; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.

9 It was foursquare; they made the breastplate double: a span was the length thereof, and a span the breadth thereof, being doubled.

We turn now to the creation of the priestly garments. Today covers the ephod and the breastplate on the chest, as well as the shoulder-pieces.

A new detail that we learn in these verses is how gold was worked into the fabric of the ephod and breastplate. In the original instructions we were simply told that they were to be made “of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine twined linen, with cunning work.” From that description one might have assumed that the “gold” simply meant linen dyed the color of gold, or just gold clasps around the edges, but today we learn that fine wires of gold were actually woven as strands throughout the fabric. Certainly, a more arduous task, but far more impressive. Also, far more symbolic, for the gold seems to represent God interwoven among the strands of our own lives.

Moving on to the breastplate, one detail I did not touch on the first time around is that thing is said to be “doubled.” This seems to suggest that it was actually one span by two spans, then folded over to make a square. This explains how it could function as a pocket to hold the Urim and Thummim.

Scriptural Analysis- Exodus 38:24-28

24 All the gold that was occupied for the work in all the work of the holy place, even the gold of the offering, was twenty and nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary.

25 And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was an hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and threescore and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:

26 A bekah for every man, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that went to be numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.

27 And of the hundred talents of silver were cast the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the veil; an hundred sockets of the hundred talents, a talent for a socket.

28 And of the thousand seven hundred seventy and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their chapiters, and filleted them.

The full weight of gold used in the tabernacle was 29 talents and 730 shekels; and the silver was 100 talents and 1,775 shekels. Talents and shekels were ancient metrics of weight, not value. The conversion to today’s metrics is estimated to be about 75-100 pounds (34-45kg) for a talent, and 0.4 ounces (11 grams) for a shekel.

Thus, a shekel was much smaller than a talent, about 1/3000th of the size. If we break the 29 talents of gold and 100 talents of silver into shekels, then we get a combined total of approximately 389,505 shekels of precious metal donated for the construction of the temple. A bekah was half of a shekel, so that comes to approximately 779,010 bekahs of metal. From that number we can understand how verse 26 is saying that it was about one bekah for each of the 603,550 men in the Israelite community.

I do not think that every man did give one bekah, though. The Israelites were not required to give their possessions to the creation of the temple if they did not want to, they varied in their individual wealth, and we were already told that some of the contributions were turned away because the measure had already been filled. It seems likely that some contributed more, and others less, and some not at all, but in aggregate it was as if every man had contributed one bekah.

Converting these metrics into today’s standards, we have approximately 2,193 pounds (995 kg) of gold and 7,544 pounds (3,422 kg) of silver. The value of these will obviously change constantly over the years, but in any time, it is a princely sum. As of today, March 19, 2025, gold is about $3,000 per ounce and silver is about $34. That brings the value of the gold over $100,000,000 USD, and the silver over $4,000,000.

Scriptural Analysis- Exodus 35:4-9

4 And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the Lord commanded, saying,

5 Take ye from among you an offering unto the Lord: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the Lord; gold, and silver, and brass,

6 And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair,

7 And rams’ skins dyed red, and badgers’ skins, and shittim wood,

8 And oil for the light, and spices for anointing oil, and for the sweet incense,

9 And onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod, and for the breastplate.

We have had verses that show God reinstated instructions from the time Israel was led out of Egypt and from the time Moses first ascended Mount Sinai, and today we see instructions repeated from the second ascension also. Thus, every major period of lawgiving has been touched in these verses, which I believe is meant to represent that all of the commandments from all of these periods were re-established.

What we specifically see repeated today is the invitation for the Israelites to donate their precious materials for the building of the tabernacle. Once again, this is to be a voluntary offering, only from those who can afford it and are moved to do so, not a general requirement for all.

We, the readers, are already familiar with these instructions, but so far as we know this is the first time that the Israelites heard them, given that Moses previously broke the tablets when he saw their idolatry. I wonder how the Israelites felt, being asked to give gold for the crafting of the tabernacle, when they had just previously given gold to the creation of their shameful idol. Perhaps they saw this as an awkward reminder, or perhaps as an opportunity for redemption.

Scriptural Analysis- Exodus 32:2-4

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

It does seem a strange thing that Aaron complied with the wishes of the Israelites and would fashion them a golden idol. Based on all the other accounts of him, it seems he was generally obedient to the Lord, so why would he consent to this? And why would the Lord trust him hereafter to serve as a priest after making this infraction?

Perhaps this was a point of failure for him, but one that didn’t destroy his soul. Perhaps he saw himself as a representative of the people, his duty being to execute their will whether for good or ill, regardless of his personal feelings. It does occur to me that Aaron might also have only complied with the people out of spite. Perhaps he saw the people’s insistence on damning themselves, and in his anger was happy to see them do it. Some of the later verses in this chapter might support this theory.

In any case, performing this idolatry was going to require the people to give up their most precious possessions. Their gold, their jewelry, and their heirlooms were all stripped from their families and given up to fashion the pagan idol.

Let us compare and contrast this to the first instruction God gave to Moses for the Israelites in building the tabernacle. Right at the start God told Moses that the Israelites would need to offer their riches if they were to build the holy place. But in those verses, God made it explicitly clear that this was to be a willful offering. They could choose to participate, or they could choose not to. No such freewill election is expressed here with the golden calf. Unlike God, the idol wouldn’t even exist without their gold, so if they insisted upon having it, sacrifice was mandatory.

Either path of worship, whether to the true God or to a false theology will require a cost of that which is most precious. The difference is that God only invites us to make that offering, whereas the false religion demands it of us! If we follow God, we will be taken only so far as we willingly submit to. If we follow evil, we will be taken for everything, whether we choose it or not.

Scriptural Analysis- Exodus 25:10-15

10 And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

11 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.

12 And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it.

13 And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.

14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them.

15 The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.

The first thing the Lord details for the tabernacle is the Ark of the Covenant that will be housed there. He gives precise measurements for its dimensions and dictates the materials that it will be made of. The body of the box and the staves will be made of shittim wood, which will then be covered in a layer of gold. The rings and the crown of the box will also be fashioned of pure gold.

Shittim wood is described as being strong and sturdy, close-grained and dense. Gold is a precious metal that is also a single chemical element, not a compound of different materials. Thus, the ark will have a structure of strength and resilience, carved to precise specifications. And over that precise structure shall be a layer of pure, natural beauty. There can be seen in this a representation of order being the foundation upon which beauty may thrive. This is a truth we can see repeated many times throughout our societies. A stable law provides the security for an artistic culture to thrive, a well-governed home gives its children the courage to dare, and a strong moral code is the basis for beautiful acts of charity. Order and beauty in one.
